I was recently blindsided by a cornhole bag, figuratively speaking.
I truly believe that there’s two sides to every story and in most situations we really only experience or relate to one. And we often form opinions and make decisions on what we know or think we know. That’s probably just human nature but in reality the truth often lies somewhere in between and we don’t always have all the facts.
So, here’s my story….
I follow a few campground owner FB groups and several times I saw posts complaining about campers playing cornhole too long, too often, or too late into the night. Obviously these people just needed something to complain about, right? Who cares! I scrolled on and put it out of my mind.
And then that annoying “other side of the story” showed its face. We have a vacation rental 2 doors down from our house… typically a non-issue. People come for the quiet and the warm weather which means we spend most of our time outside. Our most recent temporary neighbors LOVE cornhole. I mean LOVE!!! No exaggeration- All day, every day, and for the last 30 days (yes 30 days) we hear the clap of the bags hitting the boards, the loud cheers on the off chance they make it in the hole, and then more bang…bang…bang…bang…bang…bang. Oh sorry. I was distracted by the never ending cornhole game. With all this practice shouldn’t they hit the hole every time?
Relaxing outside seems impossible. I’m so annoyed, frustrated, and disappointed in myself for not seeing, I mean hearing, this side of the story. Cornhole can be too much (in my opinion and unfortunate experience) and how do you address it? They aren’t breaking any rules or laws. They aren’t being excessively loud (technically). But are they being rude? Is there such a thing as cornhole etiquette? I’m happy they are enjoying their vacation but can I enjoy mine too?
Although this story didn’t happen at a campground, it easily could and has, apparently. Somewhere in the middle lies a happy medium. Let’s be good campers (and neighbors) and find it!
